AGRICULTURAL FAILURES

Now a multimillion rand government-funded macadamia farm which was gifted to the community has failed (“Macadamia project deadlock a tough nut to crack for Mashatile”, May 23). We of late have seen a major citrus estate which had to be refinanced. There was Aldo, an export grape operation failure. Does this government not learn? You cannot put inexperienced subsistence farmers on a commercial agricultural operation and expect them to run it successfully. The chequebook is the only thing that counts for some.

Who cares about long-term planning and care of the orchards? Once the bank account is emptied, some of these managers of the operation ask for more money. The lower-level workers are the ones to suffer. How sad.
